Is the Barcelona Card a travel hack or tourist scam? If you’re planning a trip to Barcelona, this is something you’ll want to know to make the most of your time (and budget).
I’ve been to Spain many times, but only recently have I found value in these tourism passes. Maybe it’s me, or maybe the cards themselves have improved—probably a mix of both!
After using it on my last trip, I’m here to give you the scoop. This popular pass promises free public transport, access to top museums, and discounts—but does it actually save money? And who should get one?
In this guide, I’ll share my personal experience, break down what’s included, compare the costs, and help you decide if the Barcelona Card is the right fit for your adventure!
What is the Barcelona Card?
The Barcelona Card is an all-in-one pass designed to make visiting Barcelona easy and affordable.
With the card, you get unlimited access to public transport. This includes metro, trains, some buses, and trams. You also get free entry to over 25 museums. Plus, there are discounts on tours, shopping, and dining.
The card comes in 72 hours (3 days), 96 hours (4 days), and 120 hours (5 days).
What’s Included in the Barcelona Card?
The Barcelona Card is well thought out. As a result, it makes it super easy to explore the city’s main attractions. Here’s what to know:
Unlimited Public Transport
One of the biggest advantages of the card is unlimited access to Barcelona’s public transport system. They’ll give you an Hola Barcelona Travel Card. This includes metro, TMB buses, trams, and even trains in Zone 1 (FGC, Rodalies, and Renfe). You can also use it on the Montjuïc funicular.
This makes it easy to get around without the hassle (and cost) of buying individual tickets. A single ride in Barcelona costs about €2.40 each.
Now, depending on where you’re staying and how much exploring you plan to do, this could be a huge benefit. I used the pass a lot on my last trip because I stayed in Eixample, a few stops from the main attractions.
I even used it to get all the way to the Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus! My FGC train, Vallvidrera Funicular, and bus were all included. (You can also use it on the Montjuïc funicular.)
At the very least, you’ll need to use it to get to La Sagrada Familia and Park Güell, so that’s 2 round-trips right there (~9.60€)!
Note: You can also buy an unlimited travel card (2-5 days) only if you don’t think you’ll take advantage of the museums.
Free Entry to Over 25 Museums
If you’re a museum lover, this card will come in handy. You get free entry to over 25 museums, including the Picasso Museum, Fundación Joan Miró, and National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC).
Individual tickets for major museums in Barcelona typically range from 10€ to 20€. So, if you visit 3 or 4 museums (37-49€), you’ll rack up those savings quickly.

Skip-the-Line Access
No more waiting in long lines! With the Barcelona Card, you get priority access at several popular attractions. I had no idea how important this perk was until I had it. It saved me soooo much time!
Discounts Across the City
The card gives you 70+ discounts at certain museums, shops, restaurants, and guided tours around the city. For example, I received discounted admission to Pau San Recinto and Casa Vicens.
Convenience
One of the biggest benefits of using the Barcelona Card is the convenience. Explore major attractions without worrying about the cost, having to do a ton of research (attractions are listed in the booklet), booking entrance tickets in advance, or transport. First-time visitors will love it for the ease-factor.
Airport Fee Included
One of the great benefits of the Barcelona travel card is that it includes the airport fee for the Barcelona airport metro and train. This means you can use your card to take the direct train from the city center to Barcelona-El Prat Airport without paying any additional fees. (I actually prefer the Aerobus, but you can take the train in if you’d like.)
How Much Can You Save with the Barcelona Card?
Now, let’s talk about the real question: Is it worth the price? The Barcelona Card offers a lot of value. But the savings ultimately depend on how much you plan to do during your visit.
Let’s look at an example to help you decide. Say you get the 72-hour Barcelona Card (€52 as of today). Here’s how the math might work out:
- Public Transport: 4 metro rides per day at €2.40 each totals €7.20/day.
- Museums: 4 museums at an average of €12 each comes to €48.
- Discounts: A 25% discount on a €30 guided tour saves you €7.50, and a 25% discount on a €27 attraction saves you €6.75.
Now, adding it all up:
- Transportation: €21.60
- Museums: €48
- Discounts: €14.25
Total savings = €83.85.
Since the BCN card costs €52, you’ve saved €31.85 more than the cost of the card!
Where to Buy the Barcelona Card
Getting your hands on the Barcelona Card is simple, and there are several convenient options to choose from.
You can purchase the card online through the official Barcelona Turisme tickets website. This option allows you to buy the card in advance, and it will be ready for you to use as soon as you arrive in Barcelona. Plus, buying online is usually discounted.

While most visitors will prefer to get the Barcelona card, there are other Barcelona city cards available. Please read the sales page carefully as they don’t have the same discounts as the traditional Barcelona Card.

- Barcelona Card Family (Family-friendly museums + transport; 72 hr, 96 hr, 120 hr)
- Barcelona Card Modernist (Modernist museums; 72 hr, 96 hr, 120 hr)

Pick up your card at various official tourist offices around Barcelona, including the Barcelona Airport. Please refer to the sales pages at the links above for locations and current opening hours.
The card starts once you validate it. Plan accordingly.
If you prefer to buy the card in person, you can do so at tourist information points. You can also buy a Hola Barcelona Travel Card at any metro station (though it’s not as pretty!).

Is the Barcelona Card Worth It?
So, is the Barcelona city card worth it? f you’re a first-time visitor looking to experience the main attractions and get around Barcelona easily, the card offers great value: free public transport, 25 free museum entries, and 70+ discounts.
However, if you’re not planning on going to museums or using public transport, it might not be the best fit for you.
For me, the Barcelona Card was a game-changer. I visited so many places that I wouldn’t normally have. Plus, I was able to easily venture outside the city center.
So, take a look at your itinerary and see if the benefits match your travel style. If they do, then the Barcelona Card could be just the ticket!
