Our Top 4 Travel Insurance Picks (2025)

Whether you are just booking your trip or about to depart, cover your bases by purchasing travel insurance. Because we can make plans, but nothing is certain!

To give just one personal example of why travel insurance is a must, many years ago, I caravaned down the Baja Peninsula. One of the families in our group got into a horrendous accident, flipping their RV completely on its side! Thankfully, no one was hurt. But to this day, I think about how important travel insurance would have been to that family.

Now, hopefully nothing as extreme happens, but you just never know! Bags get lost, people get sick, and injuries happen. Any seasoned traveler will tell you: it’s better to spend a few extra dollars now than be out hundreds or even thousands when an unforeseen event occurs.

In this post, I’m going to tell you about 4 travel insurance providers I’ve personally used. Let’s get started!

1. Allianz Travel Insurance: Best all-around insurance for most trips

Happy couple enjoying travel experiences, with the text "I travel because some treasures hide in plain sight," and Allianz Travel logo, emphasizing travel insurance benefits for unexpected events.

Whether you’re heading out once or planning multiple trips in a year, Allianz has flexible plans that can be tailored to your travel style and coverage needs.

Our family has trusted Allianz for years. In fact, my father, a travel agent for over 35 years, favors their annual plans since he travels so frequently! I’ve used them myself and have always found their policies reliable and easy to manage.

Why Consider Allianz:

  • Backed by a trusted global provider with strong customer service and claim support
  • Offers comprehensive trip cancellation/interruption, emergency medical and evacuation, baggage loss/delay, and 24/7 assistance
  • Flexible options: choose from single-trip plans or annual coverage that protects you across multiple trips

Additional Things to Know:

  • Single-trip plans typically provide primary medical coverage, while annual plans may act as secondary
  • Annual plans can be more cost-effective if you take 3 or more trips per year
  • You can customize plans with optional add-ons, like rental car coverage or “Cancel Anytime” protection

2. SafetyWing: Best for digital nomads, remote workers & long-term travelers

SafetyWing’s Nomad Insurance offers a flexible, subscription-style plan that you can start or cancel mid-trip—no fixed return date needed. I personally appreciate how affordable it is for extended trips abroad.

Why I recommend SafetyWing:

  • Basic medical coverage up to $250K on the Essential plan (up to $1.5M on the Complete plan)
  • Flexible month-to-month billing—no need to pre-book flights or define precise trip length
  • Covers over 180 countries, with short home-country coverage (e.g., up to 30 days per 90 days, or 15 days if you live in the U.S.)

Things to Know:

  • Both plans exclude pre-existing conditions entirely
  • Base plans don’t include electronics or higher-risk activities, but you can add them on
  • Claims are reimbursement-based, often requiring upfront payment
  • Not available for travelers aged 70 or older

3. World Nomads: Perfect for adventurous travelers & active trips

If you’re planning to hike, bike, or take part in nearly any kind of adventure, World Nomads is designed for you. With policies you can buy or extend mid-trip—no need to plan ahead—it’s ideal for spontaneous, activity-packed journeys. I’ve used it for adventure travel and Mexico travel, and I’ve always had good interactions with their employees.

Why I recommend World Nomads:

  • Covers 200+ adventure activities (including skiing, scuba, mountain biking, etc.)—just choose the right plan and add-ons at purchase
  • Offers flexible, on-the-road purchase and claim filing, so you’re protected even if your return date changes
  • Includes 24/7 multilingual emergency assistance, plus optional “Cancel for Any Reason” coverage on higher-tier plans

Things to Know:

  • Available only for travelers ages 18–69; they’re working on extending coverage to older ages
  • Pre-existing conditions may be covered if you buy the Explorer or Epic plan and meet their waiver requirements
  • Activities must be added when you purchase, and participating in high-risk activities without the proper level of coverage can void your benefits

4. Travel Insurance Master: Favorite comparison tool for finding the right travel insurance

When you’re trying to decide between providers—especially if you want clear, side-by-side comparisons—Travel Insurance Master provides a simple, algorithm-driven way to match your trip details with the travel insurance that fits you best.

Why I find it TIM useful:

  • Uses a smart algorithm to recommend the most relevant policies based on your age, destination, trip cost, and desired benefits
  • Lets you compare plans side-by-side from multiple reputable insurers, filtering by features like emergency medical, rental car, financial default, and COVID coverage
  • Designed to be quick and user-friendly—even if you’re not an insurance expert, you can navigate it easily

Things to Know:

  • It’s a comparison platform, not an insurer—actual coverage is provided by one of several companies in their network
  • Since you’re using it to find and compare plans, choose your policy carefully and double-check policy details directly before buying
  • It’s ideal if you’re unsure which provider suits your needs and want to see all your options at once

Last Words on Travel Insurance

After traveling to 35+ countries (and watching plenty of things go sideways), I don’t leave home without travel insurance. I hope you don’t either!

Whether you’re looking for something budget-friendly, flexible for long-term travel, or packed with premium benefits, the options above are a great place to start. Every trip is different, so take a few minutes to compare plans, read the fine print, and choose the one that gives you peace of mind!
