14 Day Itinerary for Spain: See the Best of Spain
Wondering where to go in Spain in 14 days? I’ve put together a detailed 14-day Spain itinerary that covers the best of the country—based on 20+ years of traveling in Spain.
Starting in Barcelona, you’ll explore the city’s unique architecture. Then, travel through Madrid, Seville, Córdoba, and Granada, where each city offers its own highlights and experiences that magnify the best of Spain.
In this blog post, I’ll break down each day of your 14-day trip to Spain Whether you’re traveling solo, as a couple, or in a group, you’ll want to see well-known attractions and local favorites. I also include practical travel tips and personal insights to help you explore each destination.
Day 1-4: Barcelona
Barcelona is a city that blends remarkable Modernist architecture with lively street life. Having lived less than three hours from Barcelona, I’ve spent considerable time exploring its many neighborhoods and landmarks. Each corner of this city offers something unique.
Here’s how to make the most of your time in Barcelona during your two weeks in Spain:
Day 1: Arrival in Barcelona
Arrive in Barcelona and take it easy as you adjust to your surroundings. You’ll be tired from your travels, so start with a relaxed day in the city. I recommend avoiding any tours on the first day.
Wander through Las Ramblas, where the atmosphere is lively, to say the least. Stop by the iconic Mercado de la Boqueria for a quick bite. Spend some time in the Gothic Quarter to uncover its hidden highlights and history. Undoubtedly, you’ll appreciate the character of this historic area.
Day 2: Barcelona
Today is all about the city’s unique architecture. Begin with a visit to Park Güell—be sure to book timed-entry tickets in advance. This park is a colorful showcase of Gaudí’s creative vision. You won’t want to miss it! Get tickets ⤵
In the afternoon, continue your exploration along Passeig de Gràcia, where you can check out Casa Batlló and Casa Milà (La Pedrera). These iconic spots provide a glimpse into the city’s architectural innovation and are perfect for snapping some great photos.
Make sure to savor some tapas at a local restaurant—a tasty way to experience Barcelona’s culinary scene.
Day 3: Barcelona
Use this day to explore any sights you might have missed or revisit your favorite spots. Consider checking out the Picasso Museum for a look at the artist’s early works, or simply relax at a beachside cafe in Barceloneta.
In the evening, visit the Sagrada Família (Get tickets here.). Take your time to appreciate the intricate details and towering spires. This architectural wonder is a must-see and represents the heart of Barcelona’s artistic spirit.
Day 4: Day Trip to Montserrat
For a refreshing escape from Barcelona, a day trip to Montserrat is a perfect choice. This mountain range is renowned for its unique rock formations and the Montserrat Monastery, which is a major spiritual and cultural site.
Explore the complex and see the famous Black Madonna, an important figure in local tradition. The monastery offers a serene atmosphere with stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
Don’t miss the opportunity to take in the breathtaking views from Sant Joan if you enjoy a bit of hiking. The panoramic vistas from this viewpoint are truly impressive and provide excellent photo opportunities.
For a hassle-free experience, consider booking a guided tour of Montserrat. This highly recommended tour includes transportation from Barcelona, entry to the monastery, and insightful commentary on the area’s history and significance. It’s a great way to make the most of your visit without worrying about the logistics.
Day 5-7: Madrid
Madrid is a city that always draws me back, and having visited almost 10 times, I still find new things to love. You’ll be smiling as soon as you step out into the streets.
Here’s how to spend two days soaking up Madrid’s history, culture, and atmosphere.
Day 5: Barcelona to Madrid
Take the high-speed train from Barcelona to Madrid. Once you arrive, begin your exploration by visiting iconic spots like Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, and Gran Vía. These locations give you an excellent intro to Madrid’s dynamic urban life.
Next, head to one of Madrid’s world-class museums. The Museo del Prado is my top recommendation, especially if you appreciate classic art, but the Reina Sofía, with its modern collections including Picasso’s Guernica, is equally impressive.
In the evening, wind down by joining a tapas & wine walking tour. You’ll experience Madrid’s culinary scene, hopping between local spots and enjoying delicious food and drinks.
Day 6: Madrid
Today, dive deeper into Madrid’s rich history and architecture with a guided city tour. Some must-see stops include the Royal Palace, Almudena Cathedral, and Retiro Park. A tour will give you a comprehensive look at Madrid’s most important landmarks, helping you understand the city’s fascinating evolution through the centuries.
For lunch or dinner, consider visiting the historic Mercado de San Miguel for some traditional Spanish bites. You’ll get a taste of Madrid’s vibrant food culture while enjoying the local market atmosphere.
Day 7: Day Trip to Segovia & Ávila
Spend the day exploring two historic cities just outside of Madrid. Segovia is famous for its impressive Roman aqueduct and the fairy-tale-like Alcázar of Segovia, while Ávila is known for its well-preserved medieval walls and the Cathedral of Ávila. Both cities offer a rich glimpse into Spain’s historical and architectural diversity.
Book a guided day trip to Segovia & Ávila for an easy, stress-free experience. After the tour, return to Madrid to enjoy your last evening in the city. See tour availability ⤵

Spend the day visiting the iconic Mezquita Mosque-Cathedral, a fascinating blend of Islamic and Christian architecture. Wander through the historic Jewish Quarter, known for its narrow streets and beautiful courtyards, and explore the impressive Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos.
Stay overnight to soak up the evening ambiance of Córdoba—the city is particularly magical when the day-trippers have left and the streets quiet down.
