10 Day Southern Spain Itinerary: The Best of Andalucía
Are you planning a 10-day trip to Southern Spain? Having visited this region nearly ten times, I’m excited to share an expert itinerary designed for first-time travelers.
From the beautiful beaches and laid-back culture in Málaga to the views in Ronda, the impressive Alhambra in Granada, and the history of Córdoba and Seville, this trip will help you explore the key highlights of Andalucía (Southern Spain) in 10 days.
Whether you’re traveling solo, as a couple, or with friends, I’ll provide practical tips and insights to make the most of your time. Let’s get into your 10-day itinerary in Andalucía!
Day 1-4: Málaga
Málaga is an excellent starting point for a visit to Southern Spain and is easy to get to. Having visited Málaga 4 times, I can confidently say that its blend of culture, history, and beautiful beaches offers a warm welcome that will set the tone for your trip.
Here’s how to make the most of your time in Málaga during your 10 days in Southern Spain:
Day 1: Arrival in Málaga
Arrive in Málaga and take it easy. After your travels, it’s best to start with a relaxed day in the city.
Start by visiting the Catedral de Málaga, known as “La Manquita” (the one-armed lady), where you can admire its impressive architecture.
Afterward, take a leisurely stroll through Málaga’s charming Old Town. Find local shops and cafés along the way. Don’t miss popping into Atarazanas Market for a taste of local life and delicious tapas.
If you’re up for it, consider visiting the Castillo de Gibralfaro for panoramic views of the city as the sun sets. It’s a perfect end to your first day.
Day 2: Málaga
Kick off your second day with a morning walk at La Malagueta. This is a popular beach where you can unwind, soak up the sun, and enjoy the sound of the Mediterranean.
Then, head to the Alcazaba. This Moorish fortress offers stunning views and a chance to appreciate the blend of history and natural beauty.
After lunch, immerse yourself in art at the Museo Carmen Thyssen, which showcases 19th-century Spanish paintings, or explore the Picasso Museum to see works from the city’s most famous artist. (If you don’t like either of these museums, don’t worry, Málaga has plenty to choose from!)
Day 3: Day Trip to Costa del Sol
Now that you’ve gotten to know Málaga city, take a trip to the beautiful Costa del Sol.
Enjoy a leisurely lunch at a seaside restaurant, savoring the coastal views and fresh seafood.
Spend your day relaxing or exploring nearby towns before heading back to Málaga in the evening. This day trip is a perfect way to experience the beauty of the region and recharge for the next leg of your journey.
Day 4: Ronda & White Villages Day Trip from Málaga
Today, embark on a day trip to Ronda and the White Villages. Ronda is a bucket-list destination for me—it’s a romantic city with dramatic cliffside views and a rich history. You’ll find plenty of things to see and do in Ronda to fill your day.
Don’t miss the stunning Puente Nuevo bridge, the charming old town, and the Alameda del Tajo park.
On the way, enjoy Southern Spain’s picturesque white villages, known for their whitewashed buildings and narrow streets. This day trip provides a fantastic contrast to everywhere else you’ll visit on your 10-day trip to Spain, and is a bucket list destination, if you ask me. Book here ⤵
Return to Málaga in the evening to relax after a long day. Enjoy a late dinner, perhaps revisiting your favorite tapas spots from earlier in your stay.
Day 5-6: Granada
Granada is a city that beautifully showcases the influence of its Moorish past. With its interesting history and out of this world architecture, this destination is a must-see on your journey through Southern Spain.
Getting to Granada is easy—just take a bus from Málaga, and you’ll find yourself immersed in a city that feels timeless.
Here’s how to make the most of your time in this Andalusian gem:
Day 5: Málaga to Granada
Upon arrival, dedicate your first day to the Alhambra, a stunning palace and fortress complex that truly captures the essence of Granada.
Reserve your tickets in advance, as this iconic site will sell out during high season (July-August). Spend your day wandering through its magnificent halls and gardens. Truly, every corner reveals intricate details and breathtaking views you won’t want to miss.
After exploring the Alhambra, consider relaxing at the Generalife, the summer palace with its beautiful gardens. This serene spot is perfect for unwinding after a day of sightseeing.
Day 6: Granada
On your second day, head to the historic Albaicín neighborhood. Here, you can stroll through winding streets lined with whitewashed houses, enjoying the incredible views of the Alhambra from various vantage points.
This area gives a glimpse into Granada’s Moorish heritage. Take your time exploring local shops and cafés, soaking in the atmosphere. Join a walking tour of Albaicín and Sacromonte to learn even more, if you wish.
After several days of traveling, treat yourself to a relaxing experience at the Arab baths. We had so much fun doing this! It was a wonderful way to unwind and rejuvenate.
Day 7: Córdoba
Córdoba will undoubtedly be one of the most captivating stops on your 10-day trip to Southern Spain. It’s famous for its impressive architecture, river views, and Moorish heritage.
Getting there from Granada is convenient—just hop on a train for a 90-minute ride to this gem.
Day 7: Granada to Córdoba
Start your day at the marvelous Córdoba, a mosque-cathedral that showcases the city’s diverse history.
Next, visit the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos. Take a stroll through its beautiful gardens and learn about the city’s fascinating history.
Wander through the historic Jewish Quarter. Here, you’ll find narrow streets filled with charming patios and local shops, perfect for picking up a unique souvenir. Pick a restaurant for lunch, and try traditional Andalusian cuisine. I recommend trying salmorejo, a delicious cold tomato dish that’s a specialty of the region.
As the sun sets, visit the Roman Bridge for stunning views of the city and the river. Then, stay out for a leisurely dinner in one of Córdoba’s many plazas. The city has a special ambiance at night that’s perfect for relaxing after a day of sightseeing.
You can also book a guided tour of Córdoba to get the most out of your one day in the city.
Day 8-9: Sevilla
Sevilla is a city that perfectly embodies Spain, making it an essential stop on your Spanish adventure.
Day 8: Córdoba to Sevilla
Upon arrival, visit the magnificent Sevilla Cathedral, one of the largest cathedrals in the world. This UNESCO World Heritage site is home to the Giralda Tower, where you can climb for panoramic views of the city. I highly recommend this!
After exploring the cathedral, take a stroll through the beautiful Santa Cruz neighborhood, with its narrow, winding streets and charming patios. This area is perfect for discovering local shops and enjoying a leisurely coffee.
For dinner, immerse yourself in Seville’s vibrant tapas culture. Head to a local bar to try some traditional dishes—don’t miss the jamón ibérico and patatas bravas!
Day 9: Sevilla
On your second day, visit the Real Alcázar, a stunning royal palace that mixes of Moorish and Christian architecture. Make sure to explore the beautiful gardens and intricate tile work that make this site truly unique.
In the afternoon, take some time to wander around the lively Plaza de España. This impressive square features a beautiful semi-circular building and is a great spot to relax and soak in the atmosphere.
In the evening, attend a flamenco show. After all, Sevilla is known as the birthplace of flamenco. Check availability. ⤵
Day 10: Madrid
In the morning, board a 3-hour train ride to Madrid for your flight the following day.
Day 10: Sevilla to Madrid
Spend your final hours in Spain getting to know the Madrid city center. Stop by the Prado Museum, buy souvenirs in the Puerta del Sol, and have a nice meal to celebrate the end of an amazing adventure in Southern Spain!
Fly out of Madrid early morning the following day.
